The Physicians’ Discipleship Retreat

The Annual Physicians’ Discipleship Retreat

Designed By Physicians For Physicians

Join us for a one-of-a-kind way to unplug from the busyness of life, spend quality time alone with God, and to connect with other Christian physicians from around the country.

When you arrive at the Physicians’ Discipleship Retreat you will be welcomed into an environment of safety and grace, where physicians can share openly with each other and be challenged to deepen their walk with the Lord. Because of the unique experience gained at this retreat, many physicians have returned to Glen Eyrie every year, some for 20+ years! Attendees leave feeling refreshed, focused on God’s will for their lives, and ultimately growing spiritually as a Christian physician.

This unique discipleship retreat is great for couples, singles, and physicians in training.

History of the Physicians’ Discipleship Retreat

In 1966, a medical student named Dave Simon in Philadelphia was receiving individual spiritual help from nearby Navigators. During a break from medical school, he moved into the home of Navigator Representatives, Skip and Buzzie Gray, for further training. After graduation from medical school, Dave completed his residency training in pediatrics as well as a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine in the Army Medical Corps at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver.

Skip and Buzzie now lived in Colorado Springs, so it was natural for the Simons to invite the Grays to visit them in Denver. There, Skip and Buzzie befriended several of Dave’s medical colleagues and their wives. Over time, relationships deepened as these couples met for Bible studies, retreats, and for skiing together in the Rocky Mountains.

Bob and RuthAnn Ridley actively reached out to medical school classmates, and in 1972, during a tour of duty at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, they met Skip and Buzzie Gray at a Navigator conference, and they established a long term relationship.

When Skip Gray became the Director of the Navigator Conference Center at Glen Eyrie, he invited the Simons and the Ridleys to bring the medical couples they were ministering to for a retreat at Glen Eyrie. From this informal retreat, the idea of the Physicians’ Discipleship Conference was born.

The first Physicians’ Discipleship Conference occurred in 1979 at Glen Eyrie, with long time Navigator Representative Walt Henricksen as main speaker. This conference was so well received that it has become an annual event each winter at Glen Eyrie. Skip and Buzzie, while not always the main speaker, were always prominent in ministering to the physicians and spouses that attended every year.

It soon became evident that the Lord was using the conference (later more appropriately named a retreat) deeply in people’s lives, bringing refreshment, deep healing, intimacy with the Lord and fellow professionals, as well as transformation in individuals into the image of Christ. Many people make this an annual event in their calendars, and many have been to more than thirty conferences over the years.

The February 2020 retreat was the 41st consecutive retreat since its start in 1979.  The Lord has led our leadership team to take 2021 as a sabbath year for the retreat because of the meeting restrictions involved with the COVID-19 pandemic.  We are looking forward to what the Lord has for us in our sabbath year and reuniting together again in February 2022!  Please save the date, and check back for updates in the coming months.February 17-22, 2022
