Writer’s Workshop

September 26 - September 29

Writer’s Workshop

Aspiring Authors, are you ready to make the choice?

Join us for an authentic, high-impact workshop for beginning and advanced writers.

This year’s theme is Writing….On Fire!

Today’s competitive publishing market calls for the very best art we can offer.  More than ever the world is reaching for the light that will keep it ignited, which demands the very best soul work we can provide as well.  This year’s Glen Eyrie Writer’s Workshop seeks to build a fire under you as a writer so you can do both.  Those flames will be fanned through:

  • On-fire keynotes from our staff – Loretta Oakes, Nancy Rue and Tim Shoemaker
  • Four levels of workshop tracks
  • One-on-one meetings with our staff
  • Large group gatherings
  • Dedicated time for independent writing

WORKSHOPS

For Beginners: “Playing With Fire” with Tim Shoemaker

There are no prerequisites for participation. Those who have never attended a Glen Eyrie Writer’s Workshop, or who have participated in the Beginners Class but have not yet completed a first draft should register for this class. If you have published in the past but not attended the Writer’s Workshop, please contact Nancy Rue at nnrue@att.net to help determine which workshop to attend.

As kids, we were warned not to play with fire…you might get burned, after all.  Writing is another kind of fire and – like a real flame – capable of doing great good if you handle it right.  In this class we’ll go over the basics…tips, techniques and so much more – to help bring your stories to a whole new intensity.  We believe writing should be fun…but that doesn’t mean we play at our writing.  We’ll encourage you to take some risks and fuel that passion to write powerful fiction.  We’ll show you how to create a story that becomes a fire – and burns in the hearts of your readers.

For Intermediate Writers: “From First Draft to Fantastic: Flames That Last” with Loretta Oakes

Prerequisite: This class is limited to those who will have completed a first draft of a novel or non-fiction book by the time of the conference. Those signing up will be asked to submit an excerpt from that work, as well as a synopsis, to lorettaoakes@gmail.com by September 1, 2020, or as soon as you are able to register. The deadline is September 14 and questions should be directed to Loretta at lorettaoakes@gmail.com. Excerpts should be 1000-1200 words, double-spaced in 12 point font.

You’ve got that first draft, so what’s next? Is it finished? Is there a checklist to know when your work is ready for the next step? Maybe you’ve learned something along the way and now you need to bolster yourself to work that seamlessly through your draft. Maybe you’re worried about the muddy middle. Maybe you’re not sure your characters are strong enough. We will go through these thoughts to help you build a plan for your work to become fantastic. Much of what we do will be based on your submissions. More specific issues will be addressed in our one-on-ones.

For Advanced Writers: “Building Bonfires” with Nancy Rue

Prerequisite: This class is limited to those who have completed the Glen Eyrie Writer’s Workshops Intermediate Class in the past (for the last two years that was with Tim Shoemaker) or have only taken Nancy Rue’s Advanced Class once in the past. Those signing up for this class will be asked to submit an excerpt from that work, as well as a synopsis, to Nancy Rue – nnrue@att.net — by September 14, 2020. Each participant should email Nancy as soon as he or she registers in order to determine together what portion of the work we should focus on.

Building bonfires takes skills beyond the kindling of your basic campfire. If your novel or book-length, creative non-fiction is to light up the world and bring people together, you need a depth and breadth we can only address in the small, intimate setting of an advanced class. Instruction will be based on the specific needs of the individuals in the group and will provide for one-on-ones and assigned independent work. Let’s fire it up!

For Advanced Advanced Writers: “Setting the World on Fire” with Nancy Rue

Prerequisite: This class is limited to those writers who have taken Nancy Rue’s Glen Eyrie Writer’s Workshop Advanced Class more than once in the past. Those signing up for this class will be asked to contact Nancy at nnrue@att.net as soon as they register and must do so before September 14, 2020, to determine what portion of their work to submit.

Once you’ve reached this point in the development of your writing project, most of the work has been done … and yet, there’s more. Maybe you’ve had disappointing responses from editors and agents or perhaps you haven’t sent it out yet because it still feels like there is ‘something missing.’ These small, intimate classes will take place in the afternoon where issues common to the gathering will be addressed. The bulk of the work will be done in one-on-ones with Nancy and independent writing assignments based on your specific needs. Nancy has some new, creative approaches in her kindling pile this year!
