Physicians' Discipleship Retreat

Save the Date for Next year!

About the Retreat

Plans are finalizing for the Physicians’ Discipleship Retreat Thursday-Sunday March 6-9, 2025. This spiritual and equipping time for docs and spouses seeks to combine the surrounding beauty of this secluded and quiet valley known as Glen Eyrie with a slowish pace,
opportunities to learn from God’s Word, plus practical workshops on biblical discipleship for
“real life” (see below). By God’s good grace, many have been encouraged through the many
years and decades of this Retreat.
Importantly, a couple of questions for consideration. Need some get-away quiet time
separate from the pace of medical practice and everyday life? To assess, re-assess, think,
muse, go silent for a bit, learn more about what the Lord would have for you into the future?
Want some tools as you engage culture, parent your children and how to regularly walk with
God? How about God’s Word being brought to us faithfully as we are reminded of God’s
majesty, our need for intimacy with Him and His mission for us? And what might the
commands “Go and make disciples….” look like for us these days, whether younger or older?
Need some connection with other physicians and physician-spouses just to hang out and
laugh?

Come and join others this March in the common pursuit of becoming more like Christ, “to know Christ, make him known, and help others do the same” ®

Workshop Descriptions

There will be four interactive workshops on various aspects of discipleship and led by
physicians and physician-couples, described as follows:

  • What Can I Offer A Confused World?
Everyday we all swim in the waters of what God calls “futile, worthless human wisdom” (Romans 1:21-22). We face confusing and contradictory perspectives and world views in medical academia, in the lives of good friends, and in the thinking of our children and grandchildren. What do you have to offer a confused world?  This workshop will consider God’s pronouncement on any thinking that opposes His wisdom. We will evaluate prevalent world views and cultural thinking. Finally, and of vital importance, we’ll give attention to gaining greater confidence in seeing what we have to offer a confused world.
  • Discipling Your Children and Teens: An Interactive Workshop
We will define and discuss the process of raising children to embrace and live out the Christian Faith. Specifically we will discuss what discipleship is not, what it is and how we do it.
  • Christ in You, The Hope of Glory
The hope of walking with Jesus is that we will be conformed to the image of Christ and that He will work in and through us to bring glory to His name and the gospel that heals the world. This is His work in us yet are there ways we can cooperate with the Holy Spirit to become His servant and walk as His beloved child? For decades, the Navigators have taught disciples a process to keep Christ the Center of our lives and to walk obediently. This illustration is called The Wheel.
In this workshop, we will be divided into small groups to read scripture and discuss different spokes of the Wheel and then each group will present to the whole. Even if you have known about the Wheel before, come and learn new perspectives from fellow participants.
Together we hope to discover the hope of the glory of Christ in the Center of our lives through these spiritual disciplines, with a plan to pass the concept of the Wheel to others in your life.
  • Daily Discipleship – From Disciple (noun) to Disciple (verb)
Jesus is the ultimate example of what it means to be a disciple and how to disciple others. This workshop explores His rhythms and example of abiding with the Father and making disciples, giving us a framework to abide with Him and teach others to do the same.

Keynote Speaker: Ben Nugent

We are pleased to have Ben Nugent and his wife Melissa with us in 2025 as our evening speakers. Ben is the Collegiate Mission Director for the Navigators.  He met Christ late in high school and became acquainted with the Navigators on his first day at Illinois State University.  He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history education. He and his wife, Melissa, met at a Navigator summer training program at Glen Eyrie in 1996 and were married in 1998.

Ben and Melissa served at Colorado State University in Fort Collins from 1999- 2006, then at University of Florida Gainesville until 2015.  Ben also served as a Collegiate regional director while in Florida, then moved to the midwest in 2015 to serve as Director of the Heartland Region.

In 2016, the Nugents moved to Colorado Springs, where Ben and Melissa both served as associate Field Directors.  Ben was appointed Director of Navigators 20’s in 2017, then became the national Collegiate Director in 2019.  He is currently pursing a master’s degree in Biblical and Theological studies at Denver Seminary.  Melissa now serves as the Collegiate Operations manager.

Ben and Melissa adopted two beautiful children:  Vivian, age 14, and Sam, who went to be with the Lord in 2023 at the age of 15.  In his free time, Ben enjoys golfing, skiing, finding the perfect chocolate malt, and eating anything “Chicago style”.

During Ben’s three evenings with us, he will bring the following three connected messages from God’s Word:

  • Thursday evening. The Majesty of God. When we see God for who he really is, it changes everything in our life. God’s majesty motivates our intimacy and our mission with him.
  • Friday evening. Intimacy with God. Walking out a relationship with the Majestic creator of the universe through the ups and downs of life in a fallen world.
  • Saturday evening.  Mission with God. We have been given a mission by God, not to accomplish on our own but with him as the senior partner in seeing the ends of the earth come to know him. Mission is an overflow of our understanding of his majesty and our intimacy with God.
